7A retina specialist is an ophthalmologist with special training to diagnose and treat diseases of the retina and vitreous. The training required to become a retina specialist includes 4 years of medical school, an internship in general medicine or surgery, 3 years of residency in ophthalmology and an additional 2 years of retina fellowship. During retina fellowship, retina specialists receive special training to diagnose and treat diseases of the retina with medications, laser treatments and surgery. Some of the diseases that retina specialists treat include retinal detachments, retinal tears, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion or “strokes” of the retina.
